Yadnya Kasada Festival 2025: A Sacred Tenggerese Ceremony at Mount Bromo

Mount Bromo in East Java will once again be the spiritual heart of the Tenggerese people as the Yadnya Kasada Festival 2025 is held on June 10–11, 2025. Also known as the Kasada Festival, this ancient ceremony is one of Indonesia’s most sacred and visually stunning cultural traditions.

At the core of this annual ritual, the Tenggerese community honors Sang Hyang Widhi (the Almighty God) and their ancestors by offering sesaji (ritual offerings) into the active crater of Mount Bromo.

What Happens During the Festival?

During the Yadnya Kasada ritual, villagers climb to the top of Mount Bromo in the early hours to throw offerings such as fruits, livestock, crops, and money into the volcanic crater. This offering is believed to ensure blessings, protection, and prosperity for the community.

Although it’s dangerous, some attendees even brave the edges of the crater to catch the offerings—an act that reflects deep spiritual conviction and daring faith.

Temporary Closure of Mount Bromo Tourism

To respect the sanctity of the festival, the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) will be closed for tourism from June 10 at 00:01 WIB to June 13 at 24:00 WIB. This closure allows the ceremony to proceed without interruption from tourist activities.

Tourism at Mount Bromo will resume on June 14, 2025.

The Mendak Tirta Ritual

Prior to the peak of the Yadnya Kasada celebration, the Tenggerese Hindus also carry out Mendak Tirta, a ritual to collect sacred water from Madakaripura Waterfall, located in Negororejo Village, Lumbang District. This water is considered holy and essential for purification before the main ceremony.
